SkyHawks Field Rules

Cedar Rapids Skyhawks Official Safety Rules Revised 4/17/09

MANDATORY: All AMA, Club and Area rules must be observed.

GENERAL RULES

You must be a member of the Cedar Rapids Skyhawks and a member of the AMA to fly at this field.

Guest flying is permitted only with written permission from the Skyhawks Board of Directors.

Use of this facility is limited to flying of model aircraft. The flying of radio control model aircraft has priority, and other types of model aircraft shall not interfere with these activities. Fuel-propelled rockets are prohibited.

Only receivers that meet AMA guidelines can be used at this site. If you do not know if your receiver meets this requirement, you must verify with the manufacturer that it meets the AMA guidelines.

Flying times start at 8:00 AM and end at sunset.

Spectators and children (unless spotting) MUST stay out of the restricted areas while aircraft are in operation.

NEVER test engines in the pits or on the flight line. Never run engines in the pit area.

Transmitter Rules

Both the club member's current AMA Card and Skyhawks Membership Card must be in the appropriate frequency slot in the cabinet before the frequency pin is removed.

The correct frequency pin must be attached to the transmitter before turning on the transmitter. Return the pin to the cabinet when the transmitter is not actually in use and remove your membership cards.

Transmitter antenna shall be kept collapsed at all times except when the aircraft is in the process of being flown.

Club Flying Rules

Do not fly over agricultural ground adjacent to the flying site while it is being prepared, planted or harvested.

You are responsible for damage done to crops by your downed aircraft or damage caused while retrieving your downed aircraft.

All flying must be done east of the runway centerline and its extensions.

No flying is permitted more than 1000 feet to the north or to the south of the center of the runway.

All low passes must be announced and made east of the runway centerline.

All flying must be done east of the runway centerline and its extensions. NEVER fly over the pit area.

Aircraft must be placed at the pilot station and then started. Pilots must stand at a pilot station while operating their aircraft.

Use the area designated for engine testing to test engines. NEVER run engines in the pits.

At the conclusion of flight, taxi clear of the runway and turn off your engine. Do not taxi into the pit area.

All flying should be done on the far side of the runway centerline. NEVER fly over the pit area.

Keep the runway clear. Pilots must stand in a pilot station. Only that equipment needed to start and control the air-plane is permitted at the flight line.

At the conclusion of the flight, taxi clear of the runway and turn off your engine.

Mufflers are required on all engines larger than .074 cubic inches.

Aircraft must be placed at the pilot station and then started. Pilots must stand at a pilot station while operating their aircraft. There shall be no powered operation in the pits.

Aircraft must not be taxied to or from the pits.

All low passes must be announced and made on the far side of the runway centerline.

When more than one aircraft is in the air, all aircraft must fly in a rectangular pattern in the same direction.

No powered model may be flown closer than 25 feet to any person.

Under no circumstances may a pilot or any person touch any model in flight.

Children under 6 years old are only allowed on the flight line as a pilot or while under flight instruction.

The 25-foot AMA rule (spacing between aircraft and pilot) always applies. During flight operation, pilot must be in a pilot station.

3D Flying and Hovering Rules

All hovering maneuvers, whether helicopter or fixed-wing aircraft, must be conducted east of the runway and its extensions. There shall be NO hovering over the runway unless there are no other pilots in any pilot stations. If there are no other pilots in any pilot stations, then hovering or 3D maneuvers are permitted over the runway.

Courtesy Rules:

Limit your flying time to twenty minutes per flight including engine start and adjustments.

Proper rotation, to achieve equal flying time, should be observed by pilots on the same frequency.

If, after a ten-minute period, you are unable to get airborne, please relinquish your place on the flight line.

Position your airplane so that the prop wash does not blow on other people or equipment.

Announce take-offs and landings.

Announce engine starting.

Helicopter Rules:

Helicopter pilots must operate their aircraft in a manner consistent with all of the rules above.

There is a special designated pit and hovering area for model helicopters.

There shall be NO hovering during fixed wing operations.

Helicopters may enter the pattern of fixed wing model aircraft provided they refrain from hovering or using excessively slow speed in the pattern. A spotter is required when helicopters are in the pattern with fixed wing aircraft.

All helicopters flying in the pattern airspace must be east of the model runway centerline and consistent with the pattern of model aircraft flying within the pattern.

All hovering maneuvers must be conducted east of the runway and its extensions. There shall be NO hovering over the runway unless there are no other pilots in any pilot stations. If there are no other pilots in any pilot stations, then hovering or 3D maneuvers are permitted over the runway.

The 25-foot AMA rule (spacing between aircraft and pilot) always applies. During flight operation, pilot must be in a pilot station.
